Self-Paced Online vs. In-Person ICC Exam Prep: Which Is Right for You?
Self-paced online ICC exam prep lets you work through recorded lessons on your own schedule. In-person prep gives you a scheduled class with an instructor who can answer questions as you go. The better fit depends on your work schedule, how you prefer to study, and whether you want that face-to-face interaction.
When we say online here, we mean self-paced training. A live online class, such as a scheduled Zoom session with an instructor, is a different format.
How does self-paced online ICC exam prep work?
With self-paced training, you work through the course independently instead of attending at a set class time. You decide when to sit down with the lessons and your reference books.
That flexibility can help if taking a day off work is difficult or traveling to a classroom is impractical. You can plan your study time around your other responsibilities.
However, you still have to make room for it. An online course can be easy to put off when work gets busy. Before choosing this format, think about when you will actually study and whether you have a place where you can concentrate.
Also check how long you will have access to the course. Self-paced means you control your study schedule within the available access period.
What is different about in-person ICC exam prep?
In an in-person class, you attend at a set time and work through the material with an instructor. You can ask a question when something is unclear and discuss it while the topic is being covered.
That can be helpful if you prefer talking through an explanation or want a class on the calendar to get your preparation underway. Being away from the jobsite or office may also make it easier to focus on the material.
The main consideration is the schedule. You need to be available for the class and allow for travel. KLandes offers in-person training in the Kansas City area; check the current dates for your course before making plans.
Which format should you choose?
Self-paced online training may suit you if you need flexibility and are comfortable setting aside study time on your own. In-person training may suit you if you want direct interaction with an instructor and prefer a scheduled class.
Consider how you handle unfamiliar material. Are you comfortable working through a recorded explanation independently, or do you prefer to ask questions during the lesson? If you choose self-paced training, check what help is available when questions come up.
Either way, leave time to review after the course. Our guide to studying for an open-book ICC contractor exam explains how to approach that part of your preparation.
What should you check before enrolling?
Once you have chosen a format, confirm that the course is for the exam you intend to take. Review the required books, what is included, and any course access or attendance details. You can find the available formats on the KLandes course pages.
Taking a prep course and registering for the ICC exam are separate steps. Choosing online prep does not determine where you take your exam. See our ICC contractor exam registration guide for that process.
